Filing your ITR is easy... Filing it correctly is what really matters.
Filing your ITR is easy… Filing it correctly is what really matters.
Every year, I come across taxpayers whose refunds are delayed or who receive notices—not because they concealed income, but because of small mistakes or incomplete disclosures while filing their Income Tax Return.
Before you click “Submit”, take a few minutes to review these important checkpoints:
- Choose the correct ITR Form
- Reconcile your income with Form 16, AIS, TIS, Form 26AS and your bank statements.
- Report every source of income
- Verify TDS, Advance Tax and Self-Assessment Tax
- Report capital gains and capital losses
- If you changed jobs during the year, include salary from all employers.
- Ensure your bank account is pre-validated.
- Claim deductions and exemptions only if you are eligible, and keep supporting documents.
- Disclose your directorship and partnership.
- Report your investment in unlisted equity shares
- Disclose foreign assets, foreign income, signing authority in overseas accounts, jointly owned properties.
- Verify whether Schedule AL (Assets & Liabilities) is applicable in your case.
- Report brought forward losses correctly
- Check whether clubbing provisions apply
- Review all personal details such as PAN, Aadhaar, residential status, email ID, mobile number and bank details.
- Verify your residential status
Review the entire return once again before submission and don’t forget to e-Verify it. An ITR is not considered valid unless it is successfully e-verified within the prescribed time.
One simple advice I always give my clients:
Never file your ITR in a hurry. Spend 15 extra minutes reviewing your return before clicking “Submit”. Those 15 minutes can save you months of follow-up, refund delays or unnecessary notices.
Remember: Correct filing is always more important than quick filing.
