WHAT IS IEC?

IEC Certificate is issued by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) which comes under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The main objective of DGFT is regulating and promoting Exports from India.
Import Export (IE) Code is a registration required for persons importing or exporting goods and services from India. IEC Certificate is issued by Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) which comes under Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The main objective of DGFT is regulating and promoting Exports from India. The IEC is a 10-digit code with permanent validity issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

Who requires IEC Code?

All entity engaged in importing or exporting goods and services from India requires to register to obtain IEC code.
The requirement to make an application for IEC online registration does not arise in following cases:

  • Goods are imported or exported for the personal use and will not be used for any business or related purpose; or
  • Import or export by government ministries and departments, and certain notified charitable organizations.

Benefits of IEC code Registration.

In addition to the mandatory requirement of registration the IEC code registration is beneficial to businesses in many ways.

  • Business can expand in the international market
  • IEC code is a license for import and export businesses.
  • The registration helps Government to administer and regulate all international transactions.
  • The registered business entities can avail benefits in form of subsidies declared by the Customs, Export Promotion Council or other authorities.
  • It is a code is allotted with lifetime validity and is based on Permanent Account Number of the business organization.
  • Unlike other tax registrations, there is no post registration compliance or the return filing requirements.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR REGISTRATION

Proprietorship/Partnership/LLP/Pvt ltd/Public Ltd company.

  • Digital Photograph (3x3cms) of the Proprietor/Managing partner/designated partner/ director.
  • Copy of PAN card of the Proprietor/applicant entity.
  • Copy of Passport (first & last page)/Voter’s I-Card/ Driving Licence/UID (Aadhar card) (any one of these) of proprietor/managing partner.
  • Copy of Partnership Deed/ Certificate of incorporation as issued by the ROC.
  • Sale deed in case business premise is self-owned; or Rental/Lease Agreement, in case office is rented/ leased; or latest electricity /telephone bill.
  • Bank Certificate as per ANF 2A(I)/ Cancelled Cheque bearing pre-printed name of applicant/applicant entity and A/C No.
